1. James Ewing
James Ewing is a living artist who is engaged with the connection between an architect and a photographer. He likes to photograph architecture, landscapes, and scale models. In the book Following the Sun by James Ewing we see that he surrounds himself in an urban setting while photographing. In these urban settings, Ewing creates photos of main architecture pieces across the city during the day. In these photos he sometimes has people but likes to highlight the architecture the most. Within these photos, Ewing likes to create them based around the sun hitting the architecture or even the lights coming off the buildings. These photos show the beatify in the city that we don’t necessarily see during our everyday busy lives. These photos also spew the busyness of the people who are within these images and don’t realize the main buildings behind them because they are so focused on getting to their destination. These pieces of architecture Ewing likes are typically interesting concepts with many unique patterns to them giving them a one of a kind looks. Ewing likes to capture images far away to get the whole piece in the photo along with the scene set as it would be in everyday life. If there’s a lot of people walking by, if the space is quiet or even if there is construction going on. Ewing uses a small aperture capturing everting within the photos.
2. Cheryl Dunn
Cheryl Dunn is a documentary filmmaker and photographer born in New Jersey. Dunn graduated from Rutgers with a BFA in art history then shortly moved to NYC after. Her favorite scenes include the urban setting of people’s daily lives and the culture they indulge in. In the book Festivals Are Good by Cheryl Dunn we see pictures of people attending festivals and the feelings portrayed through their faces. Dunn likes to use photos from daylight and nighttime. She captures all aspects from festivals from the dancing, singing, to even the silly things kids get into. Dunn uses color as well as monochrome photos. With Dunns monochrome photos, we see a larger aperture capturing typically one or few subjects compared to the darker background. Dunn uses the monochrome photos to show off the glow of the skin versus the dark background at night to really highlight the subject in the photos. These photos are especially appealing because you can see all the detail and focus on this main subject and their emotions more closely without the background or colors of their clothes being too distracting. Dunns style is very unique in the aspect of her wanting to capture the emotions at these festivals and the pure sweat and feelings poured into the audiences’ emotions towards the music. Not only is Dunn capturing the audience and the emotions they show, she also throws in a few photos of the bands preforming showing that they are especially passionate about their music and getting the vibes across from the audience to them to make them preform twice as hard knowing that people are enjoying it as much as they do. Dunn captures every aspect into the emotions of the people who attend festivals and let their hearts run.
3. Bert Teunissen
Bert Teunissen is a Dutch photographer born in 1959 in Ruulro, Gelderland. Since 1996, Teunissen has been photographing European homes built before WW2 and their inhabitants. In the book Domestic Landscapes by Bert Teunissen we see European people sitting within a room that is their space within their home. Teunissen uses a small aperture to capture all the details from the subject to their background that shows their atmosphere. Teunissen typically takes photos of singular people but also doesn’t stray away from groups. Most people Teunissen uses are sitting down and have a straight face. When Teunissen takes photos of people he uses the natural light from the windows and takes in as much of it as he can. This light creates shadows but depicts the house in its natural state just like the people within the photo, they are in their natural state of their home reading, smoking, eating just as they would on any day. Teunissens photos are unique to him because he creates a connection with the people in the photo and also show their connection to the home around them. The people in the photo’s backgrounds are especially important because it shows us what there personally is from messy to clean to sporty to content. The photos show us what their life is like and who they are as people within their natural states and homes.
