Woolslager- Final Project Proposal
202 Final Proposal -- Tess Woolslager
For this final photography project I would like to concentrate on portraits. Throughout my photographic “career” I have always found people as my favorite subject to capture. Each face is so different from another-- every smile radiates a different light and each pair of eyes is a new insight into someone’s soul. There is something so special about capturing someone in their rawest form,
and making them feel comfortable to be photographed by you.
Another reason why I want to focus on portraits is because people’s faces tell a story. There’s a big
difference between a forced smile, and a soft gaze into a lens. I want each of my images to tell a real
story about my subjects, cutting out the bullshit of a fake smile and posed stance. These photos will
be authentic and raw with the intent of making the viewer know a little bit about each subject even
though they’ve never met before.
I am always happy to receive constructive criticism from my peers and mentors for my work. I intend
on genuinely using their feedback to take the same subject from my criticized image and construct
a new photo with their helpful criticism in mind. I actually really love hearing other people’s opinions
on my work, because it helps me realize that the way I view something can be very different from
how another person views something.
I think the viewer will want to spend time on each of my images because like I said before, these
photographs will hopefully tell a story and make the viewer want to read more. However, besides the
main focus of the subject, I want the viewer to appreciate how I have constructed the image by
noticing how I intentionally framed the imaged, how I put the subject in a certain position, and just
the technical aspects that I hope are admired.
Some challenges I anticipate to run into is finding enough people to photograph. 10-15 people for
each critic is a lot, however since this project overlaps with Thanksgiving break, I intend to
photograph a lot of family members as well as friends from home. Another problem I might run into
is making sure my subject feels comfortable being 100% themselves in front of a camera. Many
people tend to put on a fake presence when being photographed, and I hope to tackle that
challenge by making my subjects feel like they can be real and authentic while still being a beautiful
subject.
