Woolslager Style Paragraphs
Kathy Ryan
Kathy Ryan has been the director of photography for the New York Times since 1987. She is widely known for her book, “Office Romance”, that is focused entirely on the The New York Times office building, making a seemingly mundane place, very abstract and interesting to look at. Her photographs are told through her love for light which brings a wide range of geometric shapes to each image. She turns her creative energy towards capturing light and what it can do to make a powerful image. Her use of shadows, and intentional contrast is a signature look for her photographic style. During her time at The New York Times, the magazine has been recognized with numerous photography awards, such as the National Magazine Award in both 2011 and 2012. Kathy studied art and art history at Rutgers University and currently gives lectures on photography and serves as a mentor at the School of Visual Arts in New York City.
Mary Ellen Mark
Mary Ellen Mark was born on March 20, 1940 and died on May 25, 2015. She was categorized in many photography avenues, such as photojournalism, portraiture, documentary photography and advertising photography. Her main theme throughout her photos were people who were "away from mainstream society and toward its more interesting, often troubled fringes". Her images are all monochrome and almost every one of them carries a person as the subject. The stories they tell are very strange which in my opinion makes them intriguing. Her work was regularly published in magazines such as Life, The New Yorker, The New York Times Magazine, Rolling Stone, and Vanity Fair. Her style was known for touching upon very key social issues over her career. These include homelessness, loneliness, drug addiction, and prostitution. These photographs have been very influential on the history of photography.
