Garrett Curfman revised proposal

Final project proposal
Photo 202
For my final project I have decided to take photos of city
atmospheres. This includes the backsides of building, and items that reflect a
“backstage” view of the atmosphere. I chose to do this because I love cities.
New York City is my favorite place. Myself alone in the maze of concrete
buildings and seeing all the unique aspects of the city get me inspired to
create. There is so much personality and stories to be told by the streets and
buildings that I pass every day in downtown State college.
I have photographed buildings, streets, alleys, and different
items found in the city environment that further reflect where the photos are
taken. I met a few challenges when creating this project. One was the weather. It
has been a cold few weeks so the amount of time I spent outside was much
smaller than I anticipated. Another is locations. I have broadened my horizons
and find new places that I haven’t photographed in yet and found a unique view
to photograph them. The time of day was another challenge. The sun set sooner
in the day, so I determined that I had success in photographing mid-day during
the weekend.
Mid way through photographing and seeing the prints together up
on the board I stepped back and realized what was working and what was not. The
style I ended up with leans towards the new topographic photography. This type
of photography tends to be very urban, lack of formality, and landscape-esk.
Researching further into this photography style, I found out that it focuses on
parking lots, suburban housing, and warehouse environments.
I think viewers will find it interesting in that it reflects my
interests. These images will in a sense reflect my personality. Also, the
composition of these photos should be dynamic making viewers intrigued at what
they are seeing. This project I believe has further expanded my photography
skills in creating my images by seeing a different side of what I usually lean
towards. Learning new things, and exploring new destinations, stepping outside
of my comfort zone to gain further inspiration from the environment around me
has made my final project a success.
