Final Project Proposal
Inspired by a documentary called Our Planet, in the final project, I plan to photograph ice cubes or ice balls with micro toy figures in them. I was amazed by the magnificent icebergs and great flocks of polar animals. These filmmakers and researchers present the current condition of nature scenes on earth, and they reveal the danger of climate change. Icebergs melted, polar animals became desperate, and they are not far away from our lives. Nowadays, there are always voices stood for climate change denial, but the truth is obviously converse. I desire to exhibit my project as a signal to the public, to address the issues that happened in the world. It’s relevant to our life.
I used moulds to make ice cubes and layered them together as a scene like the polar region. And I also put toy figures in the water when I iced it. To set the scene, I chose black cardboard to minimize information, then audiences will just focus on objects in the photo. During the process, I purposely waited until ice cubes were melting to show the reflection of the light. The close-ups let audiences clearly observe the scene of “melting ice”.
The challenge I experienced was about the props. The ice melted quickly and it messed up other props. Also, I needed to adjust the lighting to show the texture of ice cubes and details of toy figures. Over and over again, when I watched these micro figures fell off the slippery ice cubes, scenes in the documentary appeared in my mind. The process helped me to develop more angles in creating scenes. Then, I realize the relationships between objects and how to use close-ups to build up emotions.
I found it became more interesting when audiences interpreted my works differently. They provide feedback and describe emotions they perceived in the photos, like sadness, loneliness and isolation. It connected the theme with people’s feelings, and it made me rethink the meaning of my work.
The whole process helped me to understand how to create photography, to convey my thoughts to others, and to comprehend other people’s work with curiosity and respect.
