Emma Cotter - Final Project Proposal

I intend to photograph nature, but with a new perspective. I want to photograph the parts of nature that are seemingly small and overlooked by most people. I want to do this because I think many people overlook what makes up our Earth and how important everything is, no matter how small. Especially in today’s day and age, dealing with the climate crisis, I think showing the beauty of nature in new ways can be eye opening. I also want to photograph nature because it has always held a special place in my heart, I’ve always loved trying to see things on a deeper level and showing how I see nature to the rest of the world. I have always enjoyed photographing images that have a deeper meaning, and for me this is about bringing awareness to the current climate crisis, in a very subtle way, and making people think about what they would be losing.
Hearing feedback is one of my favorite parts of photography. Photography can be very subjective, so hearing what people think it means/how it makes them feel is very important to me. After hearing the critiques of my peers, I will be able to build on how my work build on each other. I will easily be able to find new locations and revisit old ones. There are many forests, state parks, and other natural areas all around Penn State that I will be able to work with. If I am given feedback that some of my images don’t “feel” like they mesh as well, I will be able to explore a new area and develop and build on the critiques.
Viewers will want to spend time with my work because it is seeing something they are used to in a new light. Seeing something that is typically always viewed with one perspective photographed in a different way will make viewers sit on the piece. Viewers will also want to spend time with it because my work will show that I have spent time in the places and with what I am photographing. If I am able to photograph what I care about, it will allow others to want to understand what about what is photographed, is so special to me and what makes it interesting.

Some challenges I know I will face is the weather, though, all weather can lead to new perspectives and interesting photographs. Another challenge I could face is not having as much time as I would like to drive to a location that I want to photograph, and having enough time to explore it as much as I would like. I have decently free Tuesdays and Thursdays, but I typically like to bring someone with me while I go hiking, for safety, but it is difficult at times to coordinate. I have always found someone to go with, made the time to create the images I want, and worked with various weathers so I am not too worried. I am very excited to show why nature is so special and should be appreciated.
